Project on development cooperation and participation "A small gift is a big help"

NGO Mondo offers practical possibilities to the public in Estonia to support development cooperation projects in Africa. The main objective is to actively engage Estonian public to support development projects.

The first part of the project establishes a child sponsorship scheme (programme started on 1st of June 2009) and secondly a system of ethical alternative gifts (starting point is beginning of December 2009).

Donations target specific educational and local income-generating projects run by partner organizations in Africa (this year's target country is Ghana, in West-Africa). NGO Mondo combines public awareness activities with calls for donations that result in a more knowledgable and empathic public and a mostly self-sustainable funding scheme for development cooperation projects.

Ethical alternative gifts

This means that we give Estonian people the possibility to leave things in the shop when going for a friends or family's birthday party and instead make a donation through our webpage to the benefit of a certain project in North-Ghana in Kongo village to support the life of widows there. As in summer 2009 we successfully started the child education support programme in the same village (56 schoolchildren got the chance to go to promary school this year), then we decided that the best thing to do next is to build up support structure for the parents of these kids (mainly widows, grandparents) so that in the future they are able to support their children by themselves.

The purpose is to encourage local village people to empower themselves and not sending them aid and donations. After you make a donation we send you an ecard which you can print out or forward to your friend and it says that this year your gift is the support for a project in faraway Ghana. This way both of you learn more about what is happening in the world and can give your small contribution for making a world a better place.

a goat, a pig, a chicken, a donkey, a bull, plough, coal pot for cooking, books for the school library, toys for kindergarden, first aid box, courses for women (pleaching the baskets, making soap), tools for agriculture, seads, furniture for school, fund to build new school (fund needed for new schoolbuilding is 250 th EEK)
